Level: Hefferman Gulch Road is definitely OK for beginners, the trail itself is said to be Intermediate, but we didn’t get to the trailhead to see it.
Getting there: I-70 Idaho Springs exit #240 – Hwy. 103. Go south on Hwy. 103, take the right at the Dead End sign, which is Hefferman Gulch Road. Go past the cabins 1.5 miles and make a left at the fork. Park in the level parking area and cross back over the creek to the trailhead.
Parking: Hefferman Gulch Road is a dirt road that would be way too difficult for any normal vehicle to travel on during the winter months. We parked on the side of Hwy 103 at the entrance to Hefferman Gulch Road.
Length: Hefferman Gulch Road is about a mile and a half, if you make it to the trailhead the trail is ~1.5 miles each way (3 miles total)
Time: ~1 hour for the trail not including the road if you have to hike up to the trail
Trail type: Out and back
4WD Required: Not to get to Hefferman Gulch Road, but anything after that, yes
Extra Information: I would not necessarily trust getting to the trailhead with anything other than a snow cat of sorts. Expect to be hiking 1.5 up to the trailhead from Hefferman Gulch Road. I got most of my information from REI and Clear Creek County Trails
